"What I do isn’t about taking from nature, I want people to connect to it. We are part of the natural world, we sadly just don't act like it. If you have no relationship with nature, it has no value. If it has value, people don't respect it and I want to change that perception one group at a time"

Early Years:
Originally from the stormy shores of North-East Scotland, he moved to West Wales in 1999 and fell in love with the beautiful green landscapes. It was a drastic change from the rugged, wind swept cliffs he spend his first ten years surrounded by, searching for sea creatures and lost pirate treasure.
Inspired by his new home, a new best friend and tv personalities such as Ray Mears, he developed a keen interest in bushcraft skills, shooting, fishing and cooking whatever they could get hold of like game birds, rabbits, squirrels, fish and other seafood.
You need to balance all that meat out with some greens though right! This is where tv legend Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall was a great source of inspiration. Watching Hugh starting his smallholding life at River Cottage in Dorset, growing his own food, rearing his livestock and foraging with his friend and foraging legend John Wright.
This all gave Dan the drive to learn about the culinary and medicinal wonders of the wild hedges and edges. Starting with the basics just like most other people, such as dandelions and blackberries and building up that knowledge bit by bit, week by week, absorbing books, videos and anything else he could get his hands on. Boring most friends and partners to death on walks by stopping every few meters to look at things and spouting facts about them. Until he met the right people of course.

Career:
Fast forward over a decade to 2012 and after lots of random jobs trying to find his calling in life, this passion for the outdoors finally went from being just a hobby, to a very useful set of skills, as he started training and working as an outdoor activity instructor for various providers. Gaining his qualifications while working primarily with schools and colleges teaching over 25 different sessions such as Archery, Axe Throwing, Bushcraft, Bodyboarding, Caving, Coasteering, Climbing, Kayaking, Mountain Biking, Gorge Walking, Rockpooling and much more. In late 2019, itching for some change after about 8 years doing much of the same things, a seed was planted by his boss about possibly doing some freelance work, so in 2020 he became self employed taking away years of experience in some of his favourite subjects and was finally able to create some stand alone Foraging sessions, that weren't just part of a bushcraft session.
Now:
Dan's business Forage Pembrokeshire is going fro strength to strength, helping people connect with the natural world through wild foods, nature based education and crafts. Teaching people of all ages and abilities about the wonderful and useful things we have in our wild spaces, their roles in the ecosystem, culinary and medicinal uses as well as some local history and a bit of folklore.
Hydref Goals:
With the collective Dan wants to focus on creating spaces where everyone can do more static activities, unlike the foraging walks. A hub for crafts like spoon carving, archery, axe throwing, bushcraft, coppicing, woodworking, hide tanning, bone and antler crafts, campfire cooking, mens circles, day and multi day retreats. Dan works closely with Max, Alejandro, Alex & Lina as their skills and interests over lap.
"We do a lot of these activities together in our own lives, we are a community, like family and are very keen to share our knowledge with others as well as learning new skills and techniques together"
